"You're still young, that's your fault, there's so much you have to go through."
Who: Just
kurtsdad
What: Getting informed
Where: Free Clinic, Lima
When: A couple of hours after his visit from Blaine at the shop
Burt pressed his lips together in a tight line as he stood in the free clinic waiting for some help. There were pamphlets all around the place, but most were on the contraceptive pill and getting pregnant. Seriously not even in the ball park of what Kurt was needing here. He was promised by the young girl at the reception desk that someone would help him out soon, but if she didn't come in the next couple of minutes, Burt was pretty sure he was going to chicken out on this and leave. He wouldn't, though. Not deep down. Kurt needed the information. Hell, he had asked for the information in a veiled way and his short little pushy mate had just emphasised that for Burt that afternoon.
Kurt was home from Dalton and in bed with the flu. But Burt being a typical protective father, he had assumed Blaine's presence was because something was wrong with Kurt. And apparently there was, but just the last thing Burt expected it to be. It had to have probably been one of the most awkward conversations of his life, and he was still stunned the kid came to him to talk about sex. It was beyond recognition for Burt, at least until the confession came that he didn't have a good relationship with his own father and suddenly it made a little more sense to Burt. The kid was reaching out to him - via Kurt - and Burt knew he had to listen or it could be one of those moments where his relationship with his own kid might explode. That was the last thing he wanted.
Still, there was something about the way Blaine approached him that he couldn't shake. It made no sense to Burt why a teenage guy would be that concerned about his best friend's knowledge of sex. It wouldn't be like that with a straight kid. Burt used to be a straight teenage kid and never once did he give two hoots about how much his mates knew about sex. Except maybe that they were getting some when he wasn't. But that was it. This was... different. It was deeper, and it had taken all of Burt's willpower not to ask the kid if he needed Kurt to know about sex because, well, maybe he wanted sex with Kurt? That was just too damn much for Burt's brain to absorb, though, and he rubbed his hand over his face restlessly. Kurt was too young to have sex. He wasn't, but in Burt's heart he was, and he knew that even though Kurt and this Blaine kid weren't dating, he still needed to have The Talk with his boy.
"Excuse me, sir? Can I help you? I'm Lydia, I'm a nurse here. I can help you with anything you might have queries about."
Burt turned and found a girl there that was probably barely in her mid-twenties. But that was okay, younger was better, right? He wasn't sure really what she would personally know about gay sex, but if this was all he had to work with, so be it. "Um..." he began slowly, awkwardly. "My kid, he's seventeen, going on eighteen. He's gay... he likes boys. I was just wondering if you had any information I could give to him to help him with... stuff."
Lydia nodded and went over to the far wall that Burt hadn't really noticed much because it was half-hidden by a ficus. "We have a range of pamphlets here for gay teens of both sexes," she explained and started to pluck a few different ones from the slots. She held the pile out to Burt. "The ones on top are more about feelings and emotions associated with coming out--"
"Oh, he's already out," Burt replied with a huff of a laugh. "He's very out and very proud. But it won't hurt him to read it anyway. It was more specific stuff I was looking for. Like, uh... what he wants to do with, uh... other boys."
"Sex," Lydia filled in the gap for him, eyes shining a little in amusement. "It's okay, sir. I would say we get a lot of fathers in here with enquiries like this, but we don't. I really wish we did have more dads like you. It's tough parenting a teenager at any point, but this has the added confusion with it. The pamphlets on the bottom of the pile are wonderful. They cover all clinical elements of gay sex. The how's the whys, the whats that need to be considered with it. Precautions, things they need to be aware of, all that. But before you get concerned, it's not porn in a pamphlet. It's all covered very discreetly but openly. You should have a read of them yourself. There's no such things as too much awareness of something."
Burt looked over the pamphlets, leafing through them in his hand. He hadn't anticipated having to read them himself but as she spoke, he knew he really needed to. As much as he didn't know about being gay or didn't understand what the feelings associated with it were, Kurt was his pride and joy and he had to know to help him. Kurt probably wouldn't ask questions, but if he did, Burt would have the information he needed to have the answers. In fact, it wasn't the physical side of things he was worried about with Kurt. He didn't think the kid was at the direct place yet to be ready for sex, but he had a big history of getting emotionally invested in things and he knew he did like Blaine. It was the feeling involved Burt needed to talk out with Kurt, as hard as the conversation would be.
He was about to speak when Lydia stepped over to a small cupboard nearby and took out a discreet looking paper covered box. "Condoms and lubricant inside, and a leaflet on how to use condoms safely. It's a complimentary service for gay kids. You might not want to give them to your son, but maybe leave it somewhere he can find it himself. Better to be safe than sorry, and all that."
Burt took the box and felt like she was trying to hand him a cage of rabid gerbils. What if he gave this to Kurt and it made Kurt want to try it all out? The pamphlets would have to be all Burt could process for now. Maybe later once it all sunk in for both of them, then he could bring up the box. Or not. He wasn't sure even he had the balls to give that to Kurt. "Thanks..." Burt said hesitantly and then held up the pamphlets. "And thanks for these, they're exactly what I wanted."
"Any time," Lydia said with a smile and gave him a small wave as he left.
Once he was in his car, Burt dumped all the stuff onto the passenger's seat with a sigh. Things really were changing. Kurt was growing up. He was becoming a man and soon enough, he was going to be letting some guy do those things to him. It was information overload and Burt rubbed his hands over his face before he went to start the engine. But even then, he paused, glancing at the pamphlets warily. Instead of turning the key in the ignition, he reached over and pulled one of the pamphlets from the bottom of the pile and flicked it open... and then sat there in the parking lot until he had read each and every one of them from cover to back.
